Proclus • On Timaeus
Translated from Greek by Thomas Taylor.
Proclus' commentary on the dialogue Timaeus of Plato (d.347 BC), written in the fifth century AD, is arguably the most important commentary on a text of Plato, offering unparalleled insights into eight centuries of Platonic interpretation.
The commentary is divided into five books, and it covers a wide range of topics, including metaphysics, cosmology, and theology.
- Book I :
In this book, Proclus provides an overview of the Timaeus and discusses
the nature of the universe and the role of the Demiurge in its
creation. He also explores the relationship between the soul and the
body and the nature of causality.
- Book II :
In this book, Proclus discusses the nature of the cosmos and the
relationship between the intelligible and sensible realms. He also
explores the nature of time and the role of the Demiurge in the creation
of the world.
- Book III :
In this book, Proclus discusses the nature of the soul and its
relationship to the body. He explores the nature of perception and
sensation and the role of the soul in the creation of the world.
- Book IV :
In this book, Proclus discusses the nature of the elements and the
relationship between the elements and the cosmos. He also explores the
nature of the senses and the role of the Demiurge in the creation of the
world.
- Book V : In this book, Proclus discusses the nature of the gods and the relationship between the gods and the cosmos. He explores the nature of prayer and the importance of understanding the divine nature of the universe.
Throughout the commentary, Proclus draws on Neoplatonic
theories and doctrines to provide a deeper understanding of Plato's
text.
Some of the key Neoplatonic ideas explored in the commentary
include the nature of the One, the relationship between the intelligible
and sensible realms, and the role of the Demiurge in the creation of
the world. Proclus also discusses the importance of contemplation and
the role of philosophy in understanding the nature of reality.
